    Joe,

    Awesome Blog as usual.

You touch on an often glossed over topic …… burnout and fatigue.

All too often we start a project, we map out the plan, we jump in with both feet …. And than shortly thereafter, things start to stall. Progress doesn’t happen as quickly as we’d like, and we lose interest.

We were so psyched about this project and now it’s like everything stopped. What causes that ? ……

#1 – Our attention span ….. It’s a proven fact that the average attention span before we lose interest is 35-40 minutes. Than our minds start to wander.

#2 – The Reward ….. It seems that we as human beings have been ingrained with the perception that we should be rewarded for doing things. Whether a true reward is due or not.

#3 – Inability to accept failure …… If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Even our best plans may need adjusting once we start. Remember obstacles ? … those things in the way of people who don’t want it bad enough. Some people hit those obstacles, become discouraged, and quit. Some work harder. We need to know which category we fall into.

So when we’re involved in longer term projects, what can we do to ensure that we keep motivated, keep moving forward, and accomplish our goals ?

#1 – Learn to take a break. We’re not talking about taking a vacation !!!!! … we’re talking about a break. Get up and stretch. Go to lunch, get a cup of coffee, check out the local news. There’s nothing wrong with taking a short break to clear you mind so you can come back and be productive.

#2 – Set short term goals. The final destination is the reward, but you should enjoy every step of the way. By setting short term goals, you’re giving yourself the opportunity to recognize success. You’re noting that you’re moving in the right direction to accomplish the overall goal. Mini-milestones are just as worthy of a celebration as the final goal.

#3 – The Details ….. that’s where we can monitor our progress, confirm if our plan is going as we expected, or if we need to make changes. Not having the details, is like driving a car with a blindfold on. It’s only a matter of time until you hit something !!!…. and that’s not in a positive way !!!

    And in the end ……

#4 – Do what you love. No matter what it is that we’re getting involved in, there are going to be those monotonous and boring periods of time that only or love of the topic will keep us doing it.

Sorry Joe … nothing against your example in the video blog, but I love the snow. Dump another 2 feet on us. I LOVE IT !!!!

    See you in the studio.

    Ray
